April 2011 Newsletter

Congratulations to our Head Roaster, Andy Sprenger, who won the inaugural 2011 United States Brewers Cup Championship this past weekend in Houston, Texas!

Presented by the Specialty Coffee Association of America and the United States Barista Championship, the Brewers Cup celebrates and recognizes the art of manual coffee brewing. Evaluated on presentation and taste during a 10 minute performance, Andy beat out all other competitors by brewing the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Kochere District using the pour over method with a Beehouse dripper.

It's no surprise that Andy won with the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe from the Kochere District. The Kochere District is located in the southern Oromia region of Borena Zone and is known for producing some of Yirgacheffe's best coffees. This fully washed crop boasts warm honey aromatics with a soft floral nuance. In cup, black tea dominates, followed by delicate notes of meyer lemon and sweet sage. A creamy, buttery mouthfeel complements this complex coffee.

This coffee particularly shines as a pour over because of the flavor clarity and balance in cup. Visit our brew bar at either cafe in Annapolis for a cup, or brew your own at home. And, if you pop into the Roastery, be sure to give Andy a high-five.
